Santogold's Debut

At the beginning of the year, I listed a couple of artists that would become big names in the music industry in '08. One of those artists was Santogold, a chick from Philadelphia with a fiery personality. No, I'm not trying to set you up with her, I just thought you might want to know. Regardless, the girl has been having an impact for a while, mostly behind the scenes. She was a writer/producer for RES' highly praised debut album, How I Do.

Now she is making her own music and her debut album is going to be released in a couple of weeks. But you don't have to wait because it's been flouting around the Internet for the last couple of days. She is similar to M.I.A. and that music is a little out there. I like it, but this isn't for the casual listener. Then again, M.I.A.'s last album was named Album of the Year by Rolling Stones so I guess the electronica genre has more widespread appeal than I first thought. Get the album here.

Albums to look for in '08- Part 1

Its a new year which means its time to get introduced to some new faces and bring back some old ones. This year has no shortage of sick albums, especially this month. So, without further ado, i present to you the best albums to look forward to in 2008.

Don't Sleep on:
The Bake Sale by The Cool Kids- If you havent heard the Totally Flossed Out EP, you dont know what your missing. Forget the best new duo in hip-hop, The Cool Kids are the best duo in music, period. The album is rumored to drop late this month, but I havent heard anything official, so im not making any promises. You can get the EP here.

I'll be Lightning by Liam Finn- This New Zealand folk rocker is, well, a little different. He forms a one man band and his album has gotten noticed internationally. His album drops stateside this month. Its like ish for the 60's.

Santogold- I dont know the official title of Santogold's debut album, but if you like her good friend, M.I.A., you will be satisfied when it drops this spring. Her sound is very similar to her friend and she has performed with Spank Rock and Mark Ronson asked her to help write a song on Lily Allen's previous work. For a little sample, here is L.E.S. Oracle Spectacular by MGMT- This electronic rock group (pronounced Management) is great if you're into electronica. It took me a long time to get into it but I can honestly say I like it. Its a change of pace and the album comes out this month. Its already available on iTunes so if you instantly fall in love with it, which I doubt you will, you can get it there. Here they are live:

Made of Bricks by Kate Nash- Despite her efforts to distinguish herself, Nash is really another version of Lily Allen. Im not saying thats a bad thing because Allen's Alright, Still was one of my favorite albums of 2006. Made of Bricks is set to be released later this month.

Love the Future by Chester French- These dudes are crazy. They recently graduated from Harvard and were signed by Pharrell's Star Trak label. They sound unlike anything you've heard in hip-hop. Actually, I would not classify them as hip-hop despite their record label. Check out their single, She Loves Everybody here. It was played on the ending credits of Entourage so you know its hot.
